What Do Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat's futures look like?
Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat have quickly become one of the most dynamic duos in the NHL. With the Blackhawks going into a rebuild this off-season, Kane and DeBrincat started to question their future in the Blackhawks organization. Both of them are great players and they feed off one another and if one goes, we may see both leave.
As we all know, the Blackhawks have not lived up to their pre-season expectations and goals that they were aiming for. Most fans thought that this team would be a playoff team at the very least but it looks like the Blackhawks prime years are coming to a close. So that brings us into the off-season with two players that Hawks fans have their eyes on: Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat. Kane has spoiled us for over a decade now, winning his three Stanley Cups in Chicago while adding on a ton of awards on top of it while Alex DeBrincat is quickly rising to be one of the best goal scorers and overall offensive players in the NHL. The two have combined to create a lethal duo when they are in the attacking zone with Kane's passing and playmaking abilities and DeBrincat's shot, they keep the opposing team's defense on their heels at all times. But could we see their time in Chicago coming to an end?
There was recently a press conference following the Blackhawks 3-1 win against the Flyers where Kane and DeBrincat were asked about their future with the Blackhawks. "I'm still young. I want to help bring this team to the playoffs and win. I'm here to do whatever I can.", said DeBrincat. He seems optimistic that he will stay in Chicago for a good amount of time and although he has not had a lot of playoff experience, it seems that he will do everything he can to get the Hawks back in the chase for the cup. Kane said, "Obviously, I've developed some chemistry with DeBrincat over the years. If he's here and he's a big piece, then that makes it easier for me too, right? Because I'm playing with him every day and it makes it fun to be out there with him." So with that being said it sounds like if one of them left, it would be expected that they both would leave. Both of them are under contract until the end of next year and as of right now are expected to sign new deals. "You can still rebuild and win." Kane is obviously aging, but it does look like he has a lot of hockey left in front of him. He did mention that he would not be playing for team United States next month at the World Championships but Seth Jones will be. We have seen a lot of players go to their hometown to play their last couple of seasons because of family, including the trade involving longtime Hawks defensemen Duncan Keith. Kane may be thinking the same thing, possibly going to his hometown in Buffalo, New York for the Sabres. Kane grew up a Sabres fan and he can probably think of himself playing for that franchise at some point in the future.
The Blackhawks just played their last game of the 2021-2022 season, with a 3-2 overtime loss in Buffalo. I'm sure that every Hawks fan wishes there was playoff hockey in Chicago, but now it is time to embrace the rebuild. I will recap the season in my next article, go Hawks!
